Understanding the Science Behind Our Antibacterial Cleaners and Antiviral Disinfectants

At the heart of our multipurpose cleaning and disinfectant products lies the science of biocides. One common type of biocide used in disinfectants is called quaternary ammonium compounds, also known as QACs or QUATS. The two most prevalent QACs are benzalkonium chloride (BAC) and didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC).

These QACs are carefully formulated into a wide range of products designed to sanitize various surfaces and equipment. They are commonly used on hard surfaces that come into contact with food during processing, packaging, storage, transportation, and point of sale. However, concerns over the Maximum Residual Levels (MRLs) of QACs on food prompted the introduction of guidelines in Europe.

In 2012, non-statutory guidelines were issued, setting MRLs for BAC and DDAC at 0.5 mg/kg. Later in 2014, statutory MRLs were further reduced to 0.1 mg/kg, with a transitional period until August 12th, 2015. Since then, foods produced have been subject to these new MRLs of 0.1 mg/kg.

The tightening of MRLs has led to a focus on QAC-based products in the food industry, leading to requests for alternative disinfection solutions. Options are limited to oxidizing agents such as Sodium hypochlorite (Bleach), Hydrogen peroxide, and Per-acetic acid. However, these alternatives pose challenges as they are corrosive to equipment, have unpleasant odors, and can be difficult for cleaning operatives to use safely.

To address the limitations of QACs and their replacements, we have introduced a product based on an amphoteric surfactant called VIROKILL. This innovative solution provides a safer and more user-friendly alternative, ensuring effective disinfection without the drawbacks associated with other options.

Applications of Virokill

On lightly soiled surfaces, our antiviral disinfectants can be used as a single-stage cleaner disinfectant but on surfaces which have already been cleaned, it can be used as a terminal disinfectant at lower concentrations. They have been specifically designed for routine sanitising surfaces and used in public buildings, schools, hospitals, surgeries, nursing homes and leisure centres and where good hygiene is a major priority. Safe to use in food processing, kitchens, food preparation, food transportation and all types of plant and agricultural situations. Apply by low pressure sprayer (pump-up or trigger spray types), by high pressure washer, by mop and bucket or by immersion in a dip-tank. The longer the contact time the more effective the cleaning and the biocidal action. As a single-stage product, use at concentrations of 2-5% depending on the level and age of the soiling. For use as a terminal cleaner, apply as a 1-2% solution. In some food processing applications, it is the practice to leave this solution on the surface overnight. In all other cases, leave to work for as long as possible then rinse off with clean water.
